Curating the Darkness Since 2003
History is usually recorded in ink. Folklore is whispered in the shadows.
For over 21 years, Dark Encounters and Torchlight Tours has served as the South of England’s premier collector of these whispers. We are not just tour operators; we are archivists, investigators, and storytellers dedicated to preserving the darker heritage of our historic towns.
The Origin of the Archive
Established in 2003, our journey began with a simple mission: to uncover the truth behind the legends. What started as a series of local investigations has evolved into a comprehensive "Casebook"—a vast collection of historical tragedies, verified sightings, and oral traditions spanning from the smuggling tunnels of Hampshire to the ruined priories of Sussex.
While others may simply retell a ghost story, we trace its roots. We believe that a haunting is history refusing to be forgotten.
The Lantern & The Library
Our work is divided into two distinct pursuits:
Dark Encounters (The Library): This is where the work begins. Our team researches historical records, documents paranormal claims, and curates the stories that define our region. We are the custodians of the "Casebook."
Torchlight Tours (The Lantern): This is where the story comes alive. Through our public walking tours and immersive events, we open the files and invite you to step inside the history.
The "Keepers"
We do not hire standard tour guides. The individuals who lead our Torchlight Tours are "Keepers" of the local lore. Trained in both historical fact and theatrical storytelling, they are the bridge between the past and the present. When the lantern is lit, they do not just recite a script; they guide you through a living chapter of our archive.
A Legacy of Trust
In an industry filled with fleeting thrills, our longevity is our seal of quality. With two decades of operation, thousands of tours conducted, and countless nights spent in the dark, we have set the standard for supernatural tourism in the UK.
The Archive is open. The Lantern is lit. Will you join the gathering?
From the Casebook: Andover Heritage Tours
Back in 2016 we were asked to develop a heritage trail for Andover Town Council to highlight the introduction of the new display boards detailing the town history. For the next four years we returned to give the heritage tour as part of the Shilling Fair and offered the experience as a school workshop. Andover has a fascinating history as a coaching network for the South West and London. From Kings, Queens, Admirals and even highwaymen!
